Permanent Residence in Georgia: Who Qualifies and Fees

A permanent residence permit lets you live in Georgia without renewing a temporary permit. This guide summarises, from the official Public Service Development Agency (SDA) page, who can apply, which documents are needed, the income rule and the state fees.

Who can get a permanent residence permit?

According to the SDA, the permit is issued in these cases:

  • A minor child of a Georgian citizen.
  • A parent of a minor Georgian citizen.
  • The spouse of a Georgian citizen who has lived in Georgia for the last 5 years on a spouse permit.
  • A foreigner who has lived in Georgia for the last 10 years on a temporary residence permit (periods of study, medical treatment and diplomatic employment are excluded).

Documents

Child, parent or spouse route

  • Approved application form
  • Copy of the travel document
  • Proof of lawful stay in Georgia
  • Proof of kinship with the citizen
  • Proof of income
  • Colour photo 3×4 cm in electronic form
  • Proof of payment of the fee

10-year route

The same list, but instead of kinship you prove 10 years of residence on a temporary permit.

Income requirement

You must prove income. If the citizen is of retirement age or receives social assistance, proof of that status is required. Money in a bank account can also be counted, and it should not be less than the amount of the state pension.

State fees

  • 30 calendar days: GEL 500
  • 20 calendar days: GEL 650

Common mistakes

  • Kinship or residence documents that are not legalised or translated correctly.
  • Counting periods that the law excludes, such as study or medical treatment, in the 10 years.
  • Applying without current income proof.
